NGI Convenes National Consultation on Cybercrime and Trafficking

Published: April 2026

Nigat Global Initiative (NGI), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Justice National Partnership Coalition, convened a national consultation on “Cybercrime and Trafficking in Ethiopia: Protection, Response, and Preparedness.”

The consultation brought together key national institutions, international organizations, and frontline actors to examine the growing vulnerability of Ethiopians to cyber-enabled trafficking and forced criminality.

Participants included representatives from the Ethiopian Federal Police, National Intelligence and Security Service, Information Network Security Administration, Financial Intelligence Service, Immigration and Citizenship Service, Ministry of Women and Social Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Labour and Skills, UNODC, IOM, and other relevant stakeholders.

The discussion focused on the rapidly evolving nature of trafficking, particularly the increasing use of online deception, organized criminal networks, and forced criminality linked to cyber scam compounds in Southeast Asia.

The consultation also created space for institutions to reflect on gaps in protection systems, cross-sector coordination, survivor support, and preparedness mechanisms in response to emerging trafficking trends.

Importantly, the process generated actionable insights that will contribute to future policy discussions, institutional coordination, and response frameworks.

At NGI, we believe trafficking cannot be addressed through isolated interventions alone. Effective response requires coordinated systems, informed institutions, survivor-centered protection, and cross-border collaboration.

As trafficking patterns continue to evolve globally, strengthening preparedness and institutional learning remains critical for protecting vulnerable communities.

Media Professionals Convene on Safe Migration and Public Responsibility

Published: May 2026

Nigat Global Initiative (NGI), together with the Ministry of Labour and Skills and members of the Media Advisory Group on Migration and Trafficking (MAG-MT), brought together more than 20 media professionals for a dialogue on safe migration, overseas employment, and public responsibility.

The engagement focused on Ethiopia’s Electronic Labour Management System (ELMS), a growing digital platform designed to support safer overseas employment processes through coordinated registration, contract management, and follow-up mechanisms.

The discussion highlighted the important role media plays in shaping public understanding of migration. Participants reflected on how misinformation, sensational narratives, and limited awareness can increase vulnerability to trafficking and unsafe migration.

At the same time, the conversation emphasized that migration risks cannot be separated from livelihood realities. Many young people continue to pursue dangerous migration routes due to unemployment, economic pressure, and limited access to opportunity.

Through MAG-MT, NGI is working to strengthen collaboration between journalists, researchers, institutions, and civil society actors so that conversations around migration are informed, ethical, prevention-oriented, and grounded in dignity.

We believe prevention is not only built through policy and enforcement. It is also shaped by the stories societies amplify and the information communities receive.

25 Returnee Women and Men Complete Psychosocial and Life Skills Training

Published: April 2026

Under the Resilience and Response to Trafficking in Persons (RR-TIP) project, Nigat Global Initiative (NGI) completed a five-day psychosocial and life skills training for returnee women and men in Addis Ababa.

The training was designed to support recovery, strengthen resilience, and prepare participants for longer-term reintegration pathways.

Sessions focused on emotional wellbeing, confidence rebuilding, decision-making, communication, and future planning. Group and individual psychosocial support were also provided to create safe spaces for reflection and healing.

Following the training, participants transitioned into vocational skills pathways based on their interests and goals. NGI has already enrolled multiple cohorts into technical and vocational training programs as part of its reintegration model.

Alongside vocational support, NGI has also established the Dignity Circle, a survivor-led peer support space created to strengthen connection, mutual support, and long-term reintegration.

At NGI, reintegration is not simply about returning home. It is about restoring dignity, rebuilding stability, and creating meaningful pathways forward.
